Teaching Philosophy

Regina-teaching-4_300In my years as a violin teacher, I have come to believe children learn best with parental support. Learning the violin is a complex and rewarding process, and has the best result when a parent is actively involved. This includes attending lessons, taking notes, and assisting during at-home practice. I use the Suzuki Method when teaching children under 13 years of age. This involves daily assisted practice and daily listening. Note reading is taught after a basic mastery of the instrument is achieved. When working with older children, I combine more traditional methods with the Suzuki Method. What exactly is the Suzuki Method? Shinichi Suzuki believed that all children have talent. Practically, then, every child can learn to play an instrument with the right kind and amount of nurturing. I encourage you to read Nurtured By Love by Shinichi Suzuki and also to visit the Suzuki Association of the Americas website at www.suzukiassociation.org for more information. If you are considering enrolling your child in violin lessons, I encourage you to attend one or more live performances. Attend a professional symphony concert or a string quartet recital. Your child will have a much better idea of the instrument if he/she encounters it in a live setting. I meet with every prospective parent and child before beginning lessons. It is then that we can get a sense of each other, and I can determine if your child is ready to begin the wonderful and challenging journey towards musicianship and violin performance.   “The potential of every child is unlimited…children can play very well. We must try to make them splendid in mind and heart also.” –Shinichi Suzuki
